Ogallala Aquifer

Posted by Picasa
The Ogallala Aquifer is probably the largest fresh water aquifer in the world. It is 800 miles long and stretches from Texas to South Dakota and it feeds one-fifth of all the irrigated land in the United States.

This region... under greatest stress... is the Great Plains, an area dubbed the Great American Desert by early explorers but turned into a garden spot in the last century thanks to a single innovation: irrigation.

The problem we are facing like with many other natural resources is this aquifer is being depleted faster than it can regenerate itself. So restrictions/ regulations on new wells and their use are being imposed on farmers.

The rules will adversely affect their economic situation. The cost of food is going up!

Barkly seen here is having fun with friends and family enjoying a back to school end of summer party at his house. Wells in Minnesota are working overtime to water all the golf courses and yards..only four small rain falls the whole summer!
