At the 1860 Republican National Convention, a lawyer with only a single term in Congress to his political credit beat three seasoned politicians for the nomination. Once Abraham Lincoln won the presidency he asked his rivals to join his administration.

What was Lincoln thinking. Most Presidents in previous decades picked supporters to be in their cabinet. Lincoln took the opposite approach. Lincoln want the most qualified talent over politics...believing his rivals were the most talented and prepared to serve the country...
