Water
Barkly is always thirsty and he only drinks clean fresh water. Barkly is lucky. As the world focuses on all the supply demand imbalances in oil and other key commodities...Consider these facts:
1) Every teaspoon of sugar requires 50 cups of water to grow it.
2) The world grows twice as much food as it did a generation ago, but it takes three times as much water to do so.
3) Farms ..globally use an estimated 250 cubic kilometers of pumped ground water every year for irrigation an estimated 100 kilometers more than are replaced by rain each year.
4) Demand is outpacing supply....50 years ago many wells could retrieve water at 50 feet...now it is not uncommon to go 400 meters or more...
5) In India a farmer might use 2000 liters of water to produce 1 liter of milk.
6) Some estimates have one tenth of the world's food is being grown using underground water that is not being replenished by rains.
7) Even the USA is emptying precious groundwater reserves in order to grow grain and beef for export.
8) You could fill 25 bath tubs with the water that grows the 250 grams of cotton needed to make a single T-shirt.
You can do without oil...but you can't without water.....
China and India, Mexico and important parts of the USA have critical water issues....
